Great posts about at-risk kids

These 3 posts all make some excellent points about kids at risk. Some commentors note the hypocrisy in schools w/o going into the same details and exact complaints that I have, but I think they're worth reading.

In other news, I just read a great book called Genius Denied: How to Stop Wasting Our Brightest Young Minds I have to figure out how to get the book to the principals of both schools w/o insulting them. Please don't think I'm a nutty mom who just thinks her daughter's gifted. I didn't even realize she was until her preschool director and teachers (this year, too) told me. While I don't expect her to be one of the highly gifted geniuses who went to college instead of or during middle school, I do expect her to actually learn something while she's sitting in class all day.

I looked at the book on Amazon and a whooooole bunch of books on that topic came up as "also recommended". This is obviously an important topic to a lot of parents these days. I wish there were more voices coming from within the Frum community.
Any chance your daughter will be skipping a grade?

Makes sense - she certainly should be feeling more fulfilled, especially since she's NOT one of those students who hate school because they're lazy.
She's definitely able to skip a grade, but I wouldn't recommend it yet. Just my opinion.
She's only 6 and she's one of the youngest in her class. Let her get acclimated to school and enjoy socializing with kids her age. Later, she can skip a more meaningless grade, such as fourth or sixth, or she can skip eighth and jump into high school if she feels up to it.

    Hey Tova,
Have you ever want to have a picture to go with your blog name? I was looking through some public ones on Zoto and thought of a sun for you, since it's always a good day!

Talia, I also wish more frum people cared to educate their kids properly, in all senses of the word. :( And thanks for the picture, but I don't think I'll use it.

Morah, I agree with you about skipping. She needs to be taught the basics, like simple math and handwriting, even if she can "make it up" quickly in the higher grade. Of course, skipping to h.s. means there's a good h.s. around that has a "good, frum" class to skip to. :(
